Lava International and Intel have partnered to launch Xolo X900 Smartphone

Lava International and Intel have partnered to launch Xolo X900 Smartphone in India by the second quarter. Xolo X900 Smartphone has a 4.03 inch display, a single core 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2460 mobile chip and an 8 megapixel camera. Lava Xolo X900 will be the first Smartphone with Intel Atom Z2460 mobile processor to be launched in India. Featuring a 4.03 inch touch screen display, it will also feature near field communication capabilities along with micro-HDMI to output high quality videos.

Lava International will be the first Smartphone maker to bring an Intel Atom chipset (Medfield) housed Xolo X900 mobile in India. The Xolo X900 will have a single core 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2460 mobile processor with Intel Hyper-Threading technology. This processor packs an array of technologies developed by Intel to boost the mobile for faster performance with minimal possible compromise on battery life. An Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator supports all modern day 3D graphics and also supports high quality video playback.

Xolo X900 supports networks with Intel's XMM 6260 platform, and also features an NFC chip. With the micro HDMI port one can enjoy full HD video output. At the rear lies an 8 megapixel camera which ideally should be able to record 1080p HD video. This camera also features a burst mode which will allow users to capture ten pictures within a second at 8 megapixel quality. There's also a front facing camera for video call or video chat. This smartphone of course has Android, but from the images it appears that the device might have Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on the anvil. The device is expected to arrive early in the second quarter of this year (probably between April and June) in India. Its price has not been revealed.

Apple may use Intel chips on iPhones

After Android and Windows, Intel gets in talk with Apple as well for use of Medfield chips in iOS based devices. After signing a multi-year contract with Motorola, chip maker Intel is now in talks with Apple for the use of its Medfield chips in iOS based devices like iPhone. If everything goes well, we might just see Apple's mobile devices based on Intel processor instead of ARM cortex processors which are now bein used on iPhone. Dave Whalen, vice president of Intel's architecture group, told to The Telegraph that the company was "talking to everybody" and that they had spoken to Apple among other manufacturers about the use of Intel's 'Medfield' chips in mobile devices.

Intel and Lenovo had earlier during the Consumer Electronics Show 2012 revealed the Lenovo K800 marking Intel's entry in the smartphone domain. Motorola has also joined hands with Intel to bring an Android based smartphone with the Medfield processor. With the addition of Intel based processors in iOS devices, newer benchmarks can be expected as far as performance of the devices are concerned.

A similar transition was seen when Apple decided to change its focus from proprietary processors to Intel based processors for its MAC products as well. Intel, on the other hand, is looking at changing the ecosystem all together with the inclusion of X86 architecture based Medfield processors in devices including Android, Windows and hopefully iOS as well. What effect will it have on the real capabilities and functionalities of the devices is still to be seen as the device using this processor is still a prototype and other products are still some months away.

LG smartphones to have Intel Inside

LG and Intel have worked together earlier to create Atom based smartphones, the first of which was LG GW990.

Mobile phone manufacturer LG is set to come out with new smartphones with Intel's Medfield chipset, The Korean Times has reported. These smartphones are likely to be out in the market by March 2012. "Intel's chief executive Paul Otellini will release Intel's first Android smartphone using our own platform at the CES," the newspaper quoted Intel's Korea head as saying.

Intel is known for its processors, which are present in almost all personal computers today. On the other hand, LG is the second largest South Korean company after Samsung that produces electronics, chemicals, and telecommunications, and of course smartphones. Although Intel is a giant in the domain of PC processors, it seems to be taking baby steps in the mobile phone segment. Its competitor Qualcomm, meanwhile, has a family of mobile system on chip modules under the Snapdragon brand.

LG and Intel had earlier also worked together to develop the LG GW990 handset based on Intel's Atom processor. This was only a concept phone and was not commercialised. LG believes the time is right for the company to bring out more powerful smartphones based on Intel's processor. The new LG smartphones will run on Android.
