LG smartphones to have Intel Inside

LG and Intel have worked together earlier to create Atom based smartphones, the first of which was LG GW990.

Mobile phone manufacturer LG is set to come out with new smartphones with Intel's Medfield chipset, The Korean Times has reported. These smartphones are likely to be out in the market by March 2012. "Intel's chief executive Paul Otellini will release Intel's first Android smartphone using our own platform at the CES," the newspaper quoted Intel's Korea head as saying.

Intel is known for its processors, which are present in almost all personal computers today. On the other hand, LG is the second largest South Korean company after Samsung that produces electronics, chemicals, and telecommunications, and of course smartphones. Although Intel is a giant in the domain of PC processors, it seems to be taking baby steps in the mobile phone segment. Its competitor Qualcomm, meanwhile, has a family of mobile system on chip modules under the Snapdragon brand.

LG and Intel had earlier also worked together to develop the LG GW990 handset based on Intel's Atom processor. This was only a concept phone and was not commercialised. LG believes the time is right for the company to bring out more powerful smartphones based on Intel's processor. The new LG smartphones will run on Android.
